Our lab aims to evaluate specific aspects of physical fitness to elite and club athletes. Each individual is carefully assessed by our professionals and information gathered is used to evaluate specific components of fitness; provide advice and exercises; identify factors that may lead to injury; provide advice about diet and work with the individual on their psychological training.

    What is a Vo2 max test?

    Vo2 max testing measures how effectively the body consumes oxygen during exercise.
    It is a measure of a person’s maximum ability to transport oxygen from the air, and deliver it to active muscles.

    VO2 Max testing

    Vo2 max is dependent on several factors, including lung capacity and function, cardiac output, oxygen delivery and the oxidative capacity of muscles cells.

    During exercise , in order to produce energy most efficiently, muscles require oxygen, When the work load increases and the muscles’ demand for oxygen exceed the body’s ability to deliver, energy must be produced through different means, via anaerobic metabolism. This is a highly inefficient process that also produces by-products associated with muscle soreness and fatigue.

    One of the best ways to increase performance in endurance athletes is to extend the time, and workload, that the body can remain in aerobic metabolism.

    Vo2 max testing gives athletes the information necessary to understand their body’s boundaries and push those boundaries through further training.

    The Leinster Sports Clinic has recently purchased a wattbike.

    Wattbike captures performance data up to 100 times per second across 29 parameters whilst its performance computer delivers the kind of data that, until now, has only been available to the world’s most elite athletes. And because every bike gives comparable data and has software that grows as you do, it means you can compare your performance with the best. Endorsed and used by British Cycling, it is used by them as part of their high performance and identification programmes. If you want to find out more about Wattbikes, follow this link.

    At the Leinster Sports Clinic, subjects are fitted with a respiratory mask, covering their mouth and nose, and are connected to a gas analyser and heart rate monitor.

    The test consists of a ramped, incremental effort to maximum exertion.
    This is followed by a gentle cool down period and fluid and refreshments are given at this point, The Leinster Sports Clinic Sports Scientist then concludes the session with an in-depth explanation of the test results.

    From the results the subject collects the following data;

  • Vo2 max; This is a relative measure of the rate at which your body delivers oxygen to active muscles during exercise, measured in milliliters per minute per kilogram body weight(ml/min/kg).

  • Anaerobic threshold; (AT) This is defined as a point during exercise where muscles ‘ oxygen demands exceed the body’s ability to deliver and Anaerobic, rather than aerobic, metabolism becomes the body’s primary means of energy production. Several data points are collected here.

  • Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), This is the ratio of expired carbon dioxide over consumed oxygen (VCo2/Vo2). This value can be useful for determining the type of fuel the body is burning at  different stages of exercise/ rest.

  • Body Composition Analysis

    At the Leinster Sports Clinic  our Sports Scientist provide  comprehensive Body Composition Analysis testing using bioelectrical impedance  testing equipment.

    What Body Composition Analysis Testing tells you;

  • How healthy your body fat to lean tissue ratio is.
  • Are you within a lean, healthy range for your age & gender.
  • How to increase your lean tissue percentage.
  • What targets do you need to work towards for a healthy body.
  • Test results provide;

  • Lean tissue mass.
  • Lean tissue percentage.
  • Total Body fat (kg)
  • Body fat %
  • Hydration levels.
  • Total water content in body.
